Want to find opportunities to cover social studies content while your students absorb poetry? We can all benefit from more poetry in our lives! Attendees will explore the relationship between literature and history by studying poetry, primary sources, objects, and spaces at some of the premier historic sites in the Greater Boston area. Participants can expect to learn ways to integrate literature and history into lesson plans to further students’ skills and knowledge of both subjects.

Topics to be addressed include how historical literature helps/hinders our understanding of historical events? How do historical events influence writers and the works they create? Teachers will unravel some of the mysteries behind why many of our most beloved poems were written. Sessions will offer concrete examples of how to integrate historical topics into English Language Arts lessons and how to address ELL concepts during Social Studies in the 5th-8th grade Massachusetts curriculums.

  • To register send a $60 check payable to the Revere House to 19 North Sq., Boston, MA 02113. Include your name, grade, home and school addresses and phone numbers, and email address. Please indicate if you prefer vegetarian lunches.
  • Participants will receive 12 PDP's for attending and completing one lesson plan or one graduate credit (equal to 22.5 PDPs) from Framingham State College (credit pending) by paying an additional fee of $65 and completing a more extensive project.
  • The deadline to register is June 30, 2010 and preference will be given to 5th - 8th grade teachers.
